Demolition has started on the inside of the Fashion Mall, once a bustling destination shopping center and now a shell that has sat vacant for a decade.

Its new owners say they have already started work to transform the building into a thriving spot once again โ€” a $300 million redevelopment with 700 units of luxury apartments, new offices and retail stores. Not only will the entire mall eventually be bulldozed, but even the new name that has been bantered about for years โ€” “321 North” after its address โ€” is gone, too.

City officials said they like what they hear, and are overjoyed that finally something will happen.

“This property is in a central part of the city and it laid dormant for a long time so we’re excited to see this property being developed,” said Horace McHugh, the chief administrative officer. “It’s an opportunity for mixed use.”
